State of Oregon Department of Human Services Selects SugarCRM to Achieve HIPAA Compliance

Sugar Cube Appliances protect sensitive data while managing relationships with 35,000 healthcare providers

Cupertino, CA (December 18, 2006) –

SugarCRM Inc., the world’s leading provider of commercial open source customer relationship management (CRM) software, today announced that it has added the State or Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), the largest state agency in Oregon, to its growing list of customers. DHS, which employs 9,500 people and controls a $10.7 billion budget, oversees child welfare, senior and disability services, Medicaid and public health in the state of Oregon. DHS selected SugarCRM to improve communications with 35,000 healthcare providers within the state and to achieve compliance with federal regulations.

In 2005, the leaders of DHS faced the challenge of complying with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) – a set of federal guidelines governing electronic healthcare transactions. OMAP needed a solution to communicate electronically with thousands of providers. If deadlines could not be met, DHS would have to revert to paper-based transactions for all medical claims.

DHS selected SugarCRM’s Sugar Cube Appliance – a turn-key server that delivers the benefits of on-demand CRM with the data security of an on-site solution. DHS uses Sugar Cube to manage cases, contacts and share information between DHS employees and healthcare providers. Using Sugar Cube, DHS became HIPAA compliant and did not have to revert to paper-based transactions.

“We needed a solution that was secure, accessible, and easy-to-use,” said Bill Crowell, Chief Information Office, State of Oregon Department of Human Services. “SugarCRM was one of the great successes within DHS over the last year. We achieved HIPAA compliance, delivered a centralized and secure data set with reporting capacities that were extremely easy to use. We were expecting 60,000 claims per month that were electronic would go back to paper. With SugarCRM, we only had to process 60+ paper-based claims. This was an enormously successful effort. We would have had to have hired hundreds of people to process the case load and the error rates would have been much higher.”
